May’s roadside inspections showed that most violations were preventable through a thorough pre-trip inspection. Brake and air-system defects were the largest issue, with 8 incidents, followed by wheel and hub problems and regulatory violations with 4 each, electrical or ABS failures with 3, and HOS or driver-related violations with 2. The main message is simple: slow down during your pre-trip, report defects immediately, and do not leave until the equipment is safe and compliant.

The most common problems included air leaks, damaged or rubbing hoses, brakes out of adjustment, leaking wheel seals, loose lug nuts, non-functioning trailer lights, and severely underinflated tires. Drivers should look, listen, and feel for air leaks; check hoses for rubbing or missing spring guards; inspect hubs for oil residue; and watch for rust streaks or shiny metal around lug nuts. Always verify that brake lights, turn signals, clearance lights, and ABS lights are working before departure.

Operational compliance is just as important as equipment condition. Never bypass an open scale unless an approved in-cab device or highway sign clearly authorizes it, position trailer tandems correctly before entering states with strict bridge laws, and monitor your ELD throughout the day. Plan parking one to two hours before reaching your 11-hour driving or 14-hour on-duty limit.
